What’s on your iPod?
By Jessica Bardelli

“Oh man, this song has been stuck in my head for days!”
“Have you heard that new song by that band? You know, it goes like this!”
“I need new music!”
All of these phrases can be heard at Bethel Music Center on a daily basis.
One morning, while brainstorming some new ideas for “Learn To Play – The BMC Blog” the staff and I got to talking about our favorite tunes – the ones we
find ourselves singing without realizing it, the ones we’ve shared with all of our
friends, and (light bulb!) the ones that show up on our iPods the most often.
“What a great idea for a blog post…what’s playing on your iPod,” I
thought. Then, I started panicking…what about MY iPod?? This could get
embarrassing…what if my top songs were things like “All I Want For Christmas
Is You” by Mariah Carey? Or “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid? Oh
please don’t let there be a song from Rocky Horror Picture Show on there…
Thankfully, my top songs were safe (phew). Then I started talking to my
colleagues. I had a few of them choose five songs out of their “Top 25 Most
Played” (you can find this under playlists) on their iPods, and tell me why these
songs appeared there. Are they old favorites, or new songs that you can’t
get enough of? Songs you’re learning for a show or performance? Could the
fact that you’ve played “Chicken Fried” by Zac Brown Band 384 times have
something to do with the fact that you can never get the song out of your head?
And so…here are the results. Welcome to the first edition of “What’s on your
iPod?” from BMC. Hopefully you’ll find some new tunes to check out, and you
might be surprised to hear what some of us are listening to. Hopefully you won’t
walk away with “Dust in the Wind” by Kansas running through your head for a
week (goodness knows I did).
Jessica:
“We Are Young” Fun. ft. Janelle Monae
-I am obsessed with this song. It’s my favorite…this week.
“Don’t Stop Me Now” Queen
- This is one of my favorite Queen songs, and I LOVE Freddie Mercury.
“You And I” Lady Gaga
- I sing this with my band, so this one is always playing.
“Questions 67 & 68” Chicago
- My favorite Chicago tune. I usually play air-saxophone to this one (and
look like a complete nerd, I’m sure).
“Valerie” Amy Winehouse
- I really WANT to sing this tune, but I can’t quite get that Amy-style grit to
my voice…more practice!
Sarah:
“Call Me Maybe” Carly Rae Jepsen
- Really poppy!!! Total guilty pleasure song.
“Sink Beneath The Line” Incubus
- One of my favorite bands EVER!
“Feed The Animals” (Album) Girl Talk
- Great Workout Stuff! All the songs flow together, so the whole album is
constant energy.
“We Are Young” Fun. ft. Janelle Monae
- Love it!
“Hallelujah Chorus” Handel (The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Version)
- We’re singing this in choir, so I’ve gotta know my part.
Neil:
“One Toke Over The Line” Brewer and Shipley
- CATCHY!
“May You Never” John Martyn
- I have fond memories associated with this song.
“On The Way Home” Neil Young
- This is just a really good song.
“To The Morning” Dan Fogelberg
- Nice melody and lyrics
“Helplessly Hoping” Crosby, Stills, and Nash
- They have the best vocal harmonies.
Dan:
“Californication” Red Hot Chili Peppers
- I don’t know if it’s the catchy rhythms, the weirdly awesome lyrics, or
whatever, but I’m hooked on this song right now.
“I Wanna Be Sedated” The Ramones
- Sometimes less is more. The incredibly simple, but fast power chords
and the limited amount of words…I just love the vibe of this song.
“It’s A Long Way” AC/DC
- It’s a rock song with a bagpipe solo. Come on.
“The Unforgiven” Metallica
- Hard rocking with cool voice parts. Just a great song.
“Dream On” Aerosmith
- Great guitar parts, Steven Tyler’s voice, awesome lyrics.
